Chinese Academy of Sciences Successfully Fabricates Flexible Lithium-Ion Batteries with Inkjet Printers

The reporter learned from the Shenyang Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the 3D electronic printing research group of the Institute of Information Service and Intelligent Control Technology recently used inkjet printing technology to successfully manufacture flexible lithium-ion batteries. The battery has excellent cycle performance, can achieve integrated molding, and at the same time contribute to low-cost mass production of battery modules.

Shenyang Institute of Automation independently developed nano-sized lithium titanate ink as a battery energy storage material. This ink has an average particle size of 100 nanometers and a concentration of 15%. It has good dispersibility and excellent printing adaptability. The battery current collector uses flexible graphene paper with a thickness of 15 to 50 μm, which is comparable to that of ordinary printing paper. The 3D electronic printing equipment is also independently developed by the Institute and its printing control accuracy is 1 micron.


According to reports, researchers use a multi-layer printing process to print lithium titanate and binder onto a flexible graphene paper collector. The on-line curing temperature of 120°C can be used to complete battery manufacturing. The manufactured lithium ion battery has a 1.5 volt charge and discharge platform and has excellent cycle performance.


Experts said that the use of inkjet printing technology for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, can achieve battery flexibility, miniaturization, patterning and transparency; the use of multi-jet multi-material inkjet printing, can achieve battery integration molding; In addition, the process is not Since the substrate is selected, it can be manufactured by a roll-to-roll process, which helps to mass-produce the battery module at a low cost.
