With an average of one hundred sailings a day, the Yangtze River has become a navigable river with a high traffic volume and rated traffic in the world.

The Yangtze River is a major artery for water transport connecting China's east, middle, and west regions. Since the 1980s, along the Yangtze River, as the window and frontier of China's economic opening to the outside world, a large number of ports have been opened to the outside world. Since the 1990s, the Yangtze River has opened up to 15 open ports, China's foreign economic trade and exchanges have become increasingly frequent, the number of foreign ships entering the river has increased, and the rapid economic and social development along the Yangtze River has become an important engine to lead the rapid development of China's economy.

According to statistics from the Yangtze Pilot Center, since the opening of the Yangtze River to the outside world, the center has assumed a total of more than 360,000 vessel pilot missions. In 2009, it exceeded 50,000 vessels, of which 37,466 were foreign vessels, exceeding 70%.

"The average daily number of piloted foreign ships is already equal to the sum of the first year of reform and opening up. The requirements and level of pilotage are greatly increased," said Wang Jifa, director of the Yangtze River Pilotage Center. The Changjiang River has large changes in water conditions, complicated navigable environment, and high navigational requirements. After the outer ship enters the Yangtze River, it must rely on Chinese pilots to force pilotage to continue sailing and berthing. Since the first foreign ship was piloted on May 7, 1983, the Yangtze River Pilot Center’s pilot sailing into the river has increased from about one hundred ships that year, and has rapidly risen to the current average of one hundred sailings. It is a historical witness to the development of the Yangtze River shipping industry.

In the Nantong section of the Yangtze River, reporters recently boarded a 45,000-ton Malaysian “Motra” external ship with pilots from the Yangtze Pilotage Center. Upon boarding the ship, the enthusiastic Indian captain gave the “command” to the Chinese pilot. The reporter looked around in the cabin and saw only a wide river surface, such as weaving, and endless shuttles. It was a busy scene of “thousands of sails competing for battles and contending with one another”. Under the calm command of the Chinese pilots, the 180-meter-long ship departed from the anchorage and after more than two hours of "short battles," it finally "embedded its encirclement," and successfully docked on the Yangtze River Terminal and won the captain. The company even praised it.

The Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River is currently the world's navigable-density rated and complex navigable environment. In the Yangtze River, the daily traffic volume of ships below the Nanjing channel can reach 3,000 or more times in a peak period, reaching 5,000 times in a row. The cargo volume is equivalent to eight Shanghai-Nanjing railways. The 6 Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, which accounts for 6 to 70% of the Yangtze River, is a developed and active area of ​​the port along the Yangtze River.

Yang Zeyan, a pilot of the high quality pilot at the Nantong Pilot Station of the Yangtze Pilotage Center, told reporters that in recent years, along with the development of the Yangtze River shipping, the trend of large-scale, specialized, and high-speed vessels for the external vessels of the Yangtze River into the Yangtze River has become obvious, not only for the port and shipping companies but also for economic development along the Yangtze River. The large influx and rapid increase of foreign ships entering the river led to a rapid growth in the annual average double-digit rate of cargo volume, turnover volume and port throughput of the Yangtze River. In 2009, the total cargo volume of the Yangtze River reached 1.33 billion tons, exceeding the national freight rate. 60% of the volume is 2 times that of the Mississippi River in the USA and 3 times that of the Rhine River in Europe. It ranks first in the world's inland freight traffic for 5 consecutive years.
